As you land on Yerevan, it starts smiling and shining on you like a crazy diamond. From the very start it welcomes you like a mother embraces her child, and therefore no visitor ever feels like in a foreign city here. As the host, Yerevan offers many activities and attractions to keep her guests busy throughout the day, but Yerevan is not limited to only that. What about the spectacular places to see? What about the beautiful churches both modern and ancient, old fortresses, recently and centuries before erected monuments and more?
Depending on your choices and preferences there are various places you can see, but as they say if you are a musician it still doesn’t mean all your ideas are about music. In this regard, if you love fortresses who said museums will bear no interest to you? On the whole, everything is so incredibly beautiful in Yerevan, from people’s attitude to the activities to do and the places to see, that you will really have hard time in deciding where to start at and where to end.
Start at churches. Churches, more precisely religion, play a significant role in the life of Armenians. They are mostly faithful people the churches of which present unique architectural solutions that can be found only on Armenian churches. Unfortunately presently, you can’t see the very first Yerevan church after Armenians adopted Christianity, but fortunately there are the Katoghike Church, which is currently being expanded, the Saint Gregory the Illuminator Cathedral, which is the largest Armenian cathedral in the world or the Saint Sarkis Cathedral, which hosts a great number of wedding ceremonies due to its being very much loved by the locals. These churches, including the Saint Baptist Church and the Zoravor church, can serve not only as places to see, but also help you feel relieved and ease your pain and worries, if there is something troubling you deep in your heart.
Strange as it can sound, there is a mosque in Yerevan, and right in the center. Yerevan has been under foreign rule for a long time. This said it should be mentioned that Yerevan has mostly been under Muslim rule, therefore there used to be many mosques in the city, yet there is only one remaining, the Blue Mosque. As you pass by, you will hardly ever fail to notice it just because it is completely different from the buildings you will see in Yerevan. The blue tiles surrounding the entrance are sure to attract your attention, and no matter what religion you practice this mosque with its historical and cultural significance is definitely worth to be visited.
Monuments in Yerevan are interesting for travelers in the meaning that each of them has its own history to recount to its visitors. The Mother Armenia monument is perhaps one of the most popular ones, which is thought to be the guard of Yerevan City. Among other monuments to consider is the marvelous monument to Armenian epic hero Sasuntsi David.
If you are more for discovering the modern and contemporary Yerevan, then three places to see are the Republic Square, which is popular with its colorful and singing fountains operating from middle spring to fall from 9pm up to 11.30 pm, the Cascade Complex, which is a composition of museums, including the Swarovsky Museum, perhaps one of the most impressive museums in Yerevan and the entire region, and the last is the Opera House. No matter you are interested or not in opera or ballet, the Opera House is magnificent and you will definitely love this adorable building, especially if you have some idea in architecture.
If you would like to see where the overall history of the Yerevan city starts from, then make sure you visit Erebuni Fortress; the live proof of Yerevan’s age-long history. The site is also great if you love exploring the ancient times and feeling their breath and spirit soaring around you.
Armenians are the first nation to experience the mass killings known in the history as the Armenian Genocide. The year 1915 was disastrous for the Armenian nation as over one and a half million Armenians were cruelly killed by the Ottoman Turkey. Over 90 years have passed but still Armenians have not coped with the loss of those innocent women, men, seniors and kids that became the victims of those massacres. Today in Tsistsernakaberd there is the Genocide Memorial and right next to it the Genocide museum both of which should be visited and seen if you want to learn about what Armenians had to go through in the beginning of the 20th century. The memorial that was erected in commemoration of the Genocide victims symbolizes the rebirth of the Armenian people.
Yerevan is the city where the governmental institutions of Armenia are located. So if you are interested in these building, then two of the most essential ones can be found on Baghramyan Street – the President’s residence and the National Assembly of Armenia. The latter has a most beautiful park around it, which however, is not open every day. But if you are lucky to visit Yerevan on days when the Assembly organizes special events, then you will have an opportunity to visit this park and have a closer look at the building.
Yerevan is also home to plenty of fun and entertainment places, including theaters, concert halls, museums, cinemas, casinos and amusement parks, like Zoo and Water Land, add to this an endless variety of cafes and dining venues, serving traditional Armenian cuisine, famous Armenian cognac and wines.
