Armenian Genocide Museum-Institute

Museum-Institute of the Armenian Genocide is a non-profit organization opened in 1995. It was designed and planned by architects S. Qalashyan and A. Tarkhanyan and sculptor F. Araqelyan. The mission of the museum-institute is to carry out a scientific and academic study of textual and visual documentation of the first genocide of the 20the century as well as their exhibition.

Museum of the Armenian Genocide


The Armenian Genocide Museum is a two-storey building built into the hill. The first floor features the administrative, engineering and technical maintenance offices. The Komitas Hall receiving 170 people, a reading hall and a library are also on the first floor.

The Museum exhibit can be found on the second floor. It covers an area of over 1000 square meters (10,763 ft²). There are three indoor exhibit halls and an outdoor gallery with its own hall on the second floor.

First Hall – It includes a large map engraved in stone. It depicts Armenia bordered by Black Sea to the North, the Caspian Sea to the East, the Iranian Plateau to the South and the Mediterranean Sea in the Southwest. It also shows the Armenian settlements on the territory of Western Armenia and Ottoman Empire before the 1915 massacres. The exhibition also features photo materials depicting the peaceful life Armenians led before Genocide.

Second Hall – This hall presents eyewitness reports and documents, photos taken within 1915-1917 and portraits of renowned Armenians. Documentary movies are included as well.

Third Hall – This hall includes a comparison of Armenian population figures in 1914 and 1922. The number of deported and killed people are introduced as well.

Outdoor Gallery – This hall includes inscribed statements condemning the Armenian Genocide. The hall more resembles a courtroom.

Inside the museum there is also a bookshop, which is open during the museum operating hours.

Museum Operating Hours

The admission to the Museum is free of charge. It’s open from Tuesday to Sunday from 11 am to 5 pm. It’s closed on official holidays, so while planning a visit December 30, 31, January 1-6, March 8, May 1, 9, 28, July 5 and September 21 should be avoided.

Institute of the Armenian Genocide


The Armenian Genocide Museum-Institute as a research center focuses on the study of the Armenian Genocide committed in the Ottoman Empire. The materials are obtained from various international archives. It has a large collection of photos and postcards, old newspapers and journals, maps, Ottoman period items as well as letters and envelopes, humanitarian posters, diaries of survivors and eye-witnesses, oral stories and personal items of survivors.

The Armenian Genocide Museum-Institute includes six departments:

  • Department of History and Historiography of the Armenian Genocide
  • Department of Study of Casualties and Materials Lost of the Armenian Genocide
  • Department of Comparative Genocidology Studies
  • Department of Genocide of Eastern Armenian Population Studies
  • Department of Scientific Information and Publishing House
  • Department of Public Affairs and Foreign Relations

AGMI’s library features a multi-language collection, which is being enriched with mainly personal donations. The collection comes in Armenian, Russian, Turkish, English, Ottoman, Arabic and French. The materials can be used only within the library walls.

The library is closed on Sundays and Mondays, while on the rest of the days it’s open from 10 am to 4 pm.
