Yerevan is a safe tourist destination where violent street crime is non-existent. If you want to explore the beauty of this vibrant and lively city, walking is perhaps the best way to get around. Beautiful and clean streets shaded by big Plane trees make walking in Yerevan a great and pleasurable experience.
First of all you can head to downtown, where there is an endless variety of things-to-do and -see that will keep you busy and entertained all day long. Mashtots Avenue, one of the city’s busiest streets is an ideal starting point. It will take you no more than 30 minutes to get to the Republic Square – the heart and central part of Yerevan.
If you are short of time and do not prefer walking, never mind as the city simply teems with different modes of transportation, including metro, taxi, bus and mini-bus, sure to take you wherever you want.
Metro
Yerevan enjoys a quite reliable and modern metro system – the quickest way around the city at 100 dram (less than $0.30). Launched in 1981, Yerevan metro offers clean and comfortable metro stations (with ten stops), featuring interesting architectural design and decorated with multicolored stones, including tuba, basalt and marble, with trains running every five minutes from 6:30 am till 11:00 pm. The Yerevan metro runs an overall distance line of 14 km and has become part of the lives of the locals and visitors alike. During summer months when it’s too hot, Yerevan metro becomes the best place to cool off.
Taxi
Another best way to get around the city is to take a taxi. Yerevan is truly blessed with a never-ending range of taxi services that are cheap and easily available day and night. Taxis in Yerevan arrive within five to ten minutes and as far as the drivers know the entire city, they will quickly take you wherever you wish. It’s also possible to hail taxis on the street, which are subject to negotiation. However, highly recommended are telephone taxi companies with the average ride cost 600 to 1000 AMD within the central part of the city, not including the tip.
Mini buses (Marshrutni)
Mini buses are 12/16 seat small buses that have fixed routes and connect virtually all parts of the city. There are over a hundred minibus routes that cross the city and travel to the suburbs. In Yerevan the minibuses are usually crammed with people and you may find yourself standing. The cost per person is 100 AMD (some $0.33) and they run until late at night.
Rent a car
If you are going to stay in Yerevan for a long time and are a traveler of high standard of living, you’d better rent a car. You can choose from various models of car that will cost from 70 to 450 dollars a day. To rent a car, you should preset your valid passport and driving license.
